Campo Grande (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈkɐ̃pu ˈɡɾɐ̃dʒi], Great Field) is the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul in the Center-West region of the country. The city is nicknamed Cidade Morena ("Swarthy City" in Portuguese) because of the reddish-brown colour of the region's soil. It has a population of 796,252, according to a 2011 IBGE estimate, while its metropolitan area is home to 991,420 people (2010).
The region where the city is located was in the past a waypoint for travellers who wanted to go from São Paulo or Minas Gerais to northern Mato Grosso by land. In the early 1900s a railway was completed connecting Campo Grande to Corumbá, on the Bolivian border, and to Bauru, São Paulo. Also in the beginning of the 20th century, the Western Brazilian Army Headquarters was established in Campo Grande, making it an important military center.
With a population growth from 140,000 people in 1970 to 750,000 people in 2008, Campo Grande is the third largest urban center of the Center-West region, and the 23rd largest city in the country. In 1977, the State of Mato Grosso was split into two, and Campo Grande became the capital of the new state of Mato Grosso do Sul, comprising the southern portion of the former state. By that time, Campo Grande had long surpassed the latter's capital city of Cuiabá in population, which is unusual in Brazil, where most capitals are also the states' largest cities.

Campo Grande é um município brasileiro da região Centro-Oeste, capital do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Reduto histórico de divisionistas entre o sul e o norte, Campo Grande foi fundada por mineiros, que vieram aproveitar os campos de pastagens nativas e as águas cristalinas da região dos cerrados. A cidade foi planejada em meio a uma vasta área verde, com ruas e avenidas largas e com diversos jardins por entre as suas vias, é uma das cidades mais arborizadas do Brasil sendo que 96,3% das casas contam com a sombra de um arvoredo.
A cidade foi fundada em 21 de junho de 1872, quando José Antônio Pereira chegou e se alojou em terras férteis e completamente desabitadas da Serra de Maracaju, na confluência de dois córregos - mais tarde denominados Prosa e Segredo - e que atualmente é o Horto Florestal. No dia 14 de agosto de 1875, Pereira enfim retorna com sua família (esposa e oito filhos), escravos, além de outros (num total de 62 pessoas) e deixou para João Nepomuceno a responsabilidade pelo seu rancho. Apresenta, ainda nos dias de hoje, forte relação com a cultura indígena e suas raízes históricas. Por causa da cor de sua terra (roxa ou vermelha), recebeu a alcunha de Cidade Morena. A cidade está localizada em uma região de planalto, em que é possível ver os limites da linha do horizonte ao fundo de qualquer paisagem. A cidade tem uma população de cerca de 910 mil habitantes (ou 31,77% do total estadual) e cerca de 104 hab/km², sendo o terceiro maior e mais desenvolvido centro urbano da Região Centro-Oeste do Brasil e a 19º município mais populoso do Brasil, segundo estimativa do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), data-base 1º de julho de 2020.
Entre seus moradores é possível encontrar descendentes de espanhóis, italianos, portugueses, japoneses, sírio-libaneses, armênios, paraguaios e bolivianos. A qualidade de vida de Campo Grande acabou atraindo também muitas pessoas de outros estados do Brasil, especialmente dos estados vizinhos (São Paulo, Paraná e Minas Gerais) e do Rio Grande do Sul. Segundo pesquisa feita em 2006 pela revista Exame, Campo Grande é a 28ª melhor cidade do país em infraestrutura, fator decisivo na atração de investimentos. A cidade também ficou com a 107ª colocação entre os municípios brasileiros com mais de 100 mil habitantes em mortes por agressão (homicídios) e em mortes violentas por causas indeterminadas (MVCI) onde registrou no estudo 200 assassinatos (23,4 mortes por 100 mil habitantes), segundo estudo do Instituto de Pesquisa Econômica Aplicada (IPEA)

Campo Grande es una capital del estado de Mato Grosso del Sur desde 1977, actualmente tiene como alcaldesa a Adriane Lopes desde 2022, su población estimada en el año 2021 era de 916 001, Posee una superficie de 8118,41 km², Aunque fuera creado un poblado en el lugar desde 1872 durante el Imperio Brasileño, figura con la fecha oficial cuando fue ascendida a la categoría de municipio en 1899.
El primer asentamiento llamado Arraial de Santo Antônio de Campo Grande (Villa de San Antonio de Campo Grande) —en la actual ciudad de Campo Grande— tuvo lugar el 21 de junio de 1872, cuando su fundador6 José Antônio Pereira construyó su casa en la zona. Al poco tiempo se le unieron el caboclo Juan Nepomuceno y su blanca esposa María Abranches, procedentes de Camapuá, quienes construyeron también su rancho.
A éstos se le agregaron más mineros interesados en transformarse en hacendados y en construir poblados, convirtiéndose así en un caserío, y el 25 de agosto de 1875,5 Pereira trajo a su familia desde las Minas Generales, compuesta de su esposa María Carolina de Oliveira, sus ocho hijos y dos criados, además de acompañarlos cuatro pioneros que se sumaron para incrementar la población de la futura ciudad.
En 1879, Pereira erigió la primera capilla del pueblo bajo la advocación de san Antonio de Padua. Con el tiempo se irían asentando más familias en la localidad hasta que fuera elevada a la categoría de villa con la denominación de «Arraial de Santo Antônio de Campo Grande». La villa alcanzaría el título de ciudad el 26 de agosto de 1899 por el gobierno estatal de Mato Grosso (estado al cual perteneció hasta el 11 de octubre de 1977).
Su municipio, al igual que la región del sur del estado antes citado, se adhirió a la Revolución Constitucionalista de 1932, como primer paso para la secesión. El 11 de octubre de 1977, el sur de Mato Grosso fue finalmente separado, abarcando al municipio de Campo Grande que sería declarado capital, para constituir el 1 de enero de 1979 al nuevo estado denominado Mato Grosso del Sur.

Campo Grande is a Brazilian municipality in the Midwest region , capital of the state of Mato Grosso do Sul . Historic stronghold of divisionists between the south and the north, Campo Grande was founded by miners, who came to take advantage of the native pasture fields and the crystalline waters of the cerrado region. With a population growth from 140,000 people in 1970 to 750,000 people in 2008, Campo Grande is the third largest urban center of the Center-West region, and the 23rd largest city in the country. In 1977, the State of Mato Grosso was split into two, and Campo Grande became the capital of the new state of Mato Grosso do Sul, comprising the southern portion of the former state. By that time, Campo Grande had long surpassed the latter's capital city of Cuiabá in population, which is unusual in Brazil, where most capitals are also the states' largest cities.
Today, the city has its own culture, which is a mixture of several ethnic groups, most notably immigrants from the Japanese prefecture of Okinawa,[3] Middle Easterners,[4] Armenians,[5] Portuguese people, Germans, Italians, Spaniards, and Paraguayans,[6] finally mixed with Asian and White Brazilians from the Brazilian Southern and Southeast regions, its native Amerindian peoples and Afro-Brazilians.

Campo Grande é um município brasileiro da região Centro-Oeste, capital do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul. Reduto histórico de divisionistas entre o sul e o norte, Campo Grande foi fundada por mineiros, que vieram aproveitar os campos de pastagens nativas e as águas cristalinas da região dos cerrados. A cidade foi planejada em meio a uma vasta área verde, com ruas e avenidas largas e com diversos jardins por entre as suas vias, é uma das cidades mais arborizadas do Brasil sendo que 96,3% das casas contam com a sombra de um arvoredo.
A cidade foi fundada em 21 de junho de 1872, quando José Antônio Pereira chegou e se alojou em terras férteis e completamente desabitadas da Serra de Maracaju, na confluência de dois córregos - mais tarde denominados Prosa e Segredo - e que atualmente é o Horto Florestal. No dia 14 de agosto de 1875, Pereira enfim retorna com sua família (esposa e oito filhos), escravos, além de outros (num total de 62 pessoas) e deixou para João Nepomuceno a responsabilidade pelo seu rancho. Apresenta, ainda nos dias de hoje, forte relação com a cultura indígena e suas raízes históricas. Por causa da cor de sua terra (roxa ou vermelha), recebeu a alcunha de Cidade Morena. A cidade está localizada em uma região de planalto, em que é possível ver os limites da linha do horizonte ao fundo de qualquer paisagem. A cidade tem uma população de cerca de 910 mil habitantes (ou 31,77% do total estadual) e cerca de 104 hab/km², sendo o terceiro maior e mais desenvolvido centro urbano da Região Centro-Oeste do Brasil e a 19º município mais populoso do Brasil, segundo estimativa do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), data-base 1º de julho de 2020.
Entre seus moradores é possível encontrar descendentes de espanhóis, italianos, portugueses, japoneses, sírio-libaneses, armênios, paraguaios e bolivianos. A qualidade de vida de Campo Grande acabou atraindo também muitas pessoas de outros estados do Brasil, especialmente dos estados vizinhos (São Paulo, Paraná e Minas Gerais) e do Rio Grande do Sul. Segundo pesquisa feita em 2006 pela revista Exame, Campo Grande é a 28ª melhor cidade do país em infraestrutura, fator decisivo na atração de investimentos. Campo Grande es una capital del estado de Mato Grosso del Sur desde 1977, actualmente tiene como alcaldesa a Adriane Lopes desde 2022, su población estimada en el año 2021 era de 916 001, Posee una superficie de 8118,41 km², Aunque fuera creado un poblado en el lugar desde 1872 durante el Imperio Brasileño, figura con la fecha oficial cuando fue ascendida a la categoría de municipio en 1899.
El primer asentamiento llamado Arraial de Santo Antônio de Campo Grande (Villa de San Antonio de Campo Grande) —en la actual ciudad de Campo Grande— tuvo lugar el 21 de junio de 1872, cuando su fundador6 José Antônio Pereira construyó su casa en la zona. Al poco tiempo se le unieron el caboclo Juan Nepomuceno y su blanca esposa María Abranches, procedentes de Camapuá, quienes construyeron también su rancho.
A éstos se le agregaron más mineros interesados en transformarse en hacendados y en construir poblados, convirtiéndose así en un caserío, y el 25 de agosto de 1875,5 Pereira trajo a su familia desde las Minas Generales, compuesta de su esposa María Carolina de Oliveira, sus ocho hijos y dos criados, además de acompañarlos cuatro pioneros que se sumaron para incrementar la población de la futura ciudad.
En 1879, Pereira erigió la primera capilla del pueblo bajo la advocación de san Antonio de Padua. Con el tiempo se irían asentando más familias en la localidad hasta que fuera elevada a la categoría de villa con la denominación de «Arraial de Santo Antônio de Campo Grande». La villa alcanzaría el título de ciudad el 26 de agosto de 1899 por el gobierno estatal de Mato Grosso (estado al cual perteneció hasta el 11 de octubre de 1977).
Su municipio, al igual que la región del sur del estado antes citado, se adhirió a la Revolución Constitucionalista de 1932, como primer paso para la secesión. El 11 de octubre de 1977, el sur de Mato Grosso fue finalmente separado, abarcando al municipio de Campo Grande que sería declarado capital, para constituir el 1 de enero de 1979 al nuevo estado denominado Mato Grosso del Sur.
